[00:00:00] Stacy Zant: Hello, listeners and viewers. I’m so excited to have with me here today, the one and only Laquisha Hall. I’m going to share with you why she’s the perfect person to speak on her amazing topic in her upcoming summit, as well as in the Made to Create spring preview event. Laquisha Hall began her creative journey in her early teen years.
She engaged in a lot of journaling and drawing because she had no outlet or safe place to reveal that she was sexually abused. Being creative was an escape for Laquisha, an opportunity to see herself in a better place. She found that this was a therapeutic way for her to release stress and give a visual voice to her darkest secret.
She’s now the [00:01:00] confident canvas. God called her to be. A masterpiece since starting her brand Confident Canvas, Laquisha has created, taught classes internationally and co-authored a book to support others in finding their own creative voice. She is skilled at Bible journaling, mixed media, hand lettering, journaling, drawing, painting, and more.
Laquisha works with many creative brands and platforms, including illustrated Faith. Welcome, Laquisha.
[00:01:36] LaQuisha Hall: Thank you so much.
[00:01:39] Stacy Zant: It is such a pleasure to have you here today. And. I have to publicly say just how much grace, um, you have just shown forth in the short period of time that I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet you.
[00:01:51] LaQuisha Hall: Aw, thank you so much. I truly appreciate being invited. Aw,
[00:01:56] Stacy Zant: God is so good. You know, uh, when I was looking at the amazing [00:02:00] work that you do, I know that you would add such tremendous value to our fearless creators who are still trying to figure out what is it that they’re called to fearlessly create and.
Even while I was reading your bio, I see that there’s just so much in the inter web of you getting to the place where you are today. And I know it’s never easy, but it’s absolutely worth it for the masterpiece that God is creating out of you and out of all of us. So I want you to share how is it that you decided and knew what it is you would fearlessly create in a given season that you’re in?
[00:02:43] LaQuisha Hall: You know, um, a lot of what I have created has been inspired by the things around me, whether it be hard or easy. So I’m inspired a lot by nature, you’ll see a lot of florals [00:03:00] in my art, which will be the be doing here on this platform. Uh, When I was growing up, I, when I was asked as a child what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would say a bird.
And so let’s see, birds in my art butterflies. I think I’m inspired by nature and the world around me, but I’m also inspired by hard things. Um, as you read, I have overcome a lot of trauma, not just sexual abuse, but uh, being a child in a domestic violence household. And so what you’ll also encounter is a lot of.
The awareness colors in my art. So I use a lot of purple and teal, and a lot of people think it’s just because it’s my favorite colors, but it’s only actually because those are the awareness colors for those two causes. And keeping those colors in front of me just ground me and remind me of why I’m doing the art.
[00:03:58] Stacy Zant: Wow. So much [00:04:00] purpose in what you do Laquisha and recognizing that it doesn’t just happen, right? It’s this journey that we’re on, and I love that you’ve pulled in this aspect of what is around you. What God has created as nature to inspire you and to even get you to a place where you can, um, prayerfully be calm, right?
Yeah. So knowing that what is around you has inspired you to be able to create the different. Masterpiece ideas that God gives you. But then there are times when you have to be so intentional about actually creating the thing that God wants you to create and design in this moment. And so I want you to share how do you plan?
To be able to get to that place of fearless creation or confidently creating, right. Um, when you have a specific [00:05:00] project or an idea that comes to you, just give us an idea or a walkthrough about your routine and planning to create.
[00:05:09] LaQuisha Hall: So I try to visualize. Where I’m trying to go. So initially of or, or I might know what my assignment is, but I’ll try to see what I would like the end results to be.
And then as I create, um, I will allow myself to freely use things, add things, um, create details in the art spontaneously. So I might have an idea where I’m gonna write a certain text or use a certain image, but as we create, sometimes we discover that there are things that add beauty and value to the art that we’re creating.
And so I allow that to happen. I’m not so. Stuck on that visual that I had at the beginning of the project, that I [00:06:00] don’t allow the spontaneous, um, additions to my art. I think it’s the spontaneity that stops us sometimes because most artists will visualize what they want the end result to be, and a lot of artists will.
Do everything they can to attain just that visual. And I think it is when we allow ourselves those spontaneous moments where we find, oh wow, this is more beautiful than I imagined, just like our lives and. In general, like sometimes things turn out way better than we expect because we allow blessings or opportunities or, um, certain people into our labs.
Because we don’t always plan for that either.
[00:06:52] Stacy Zant: Right? Right. Wow. So in the margins right of even the mess, we’re able to allow God [00:07:00] to form something so beautiful out of us and out of what we create. I love, love, love. You know, this. This picture that you’re painting for, even when you have to accomplish a task and you have the assignment before you, but just even being at a place where you can say, okay, Lord, have your way.
I wanna make room for you to move and for your anointing to flow. That’s so powerful. Laquisha. Thank you for sharing that with us. You know, I want you to also share with us, A little bit about your session and gimme a little sneak peek as to why people shouldn’t take the time to, to tune in and to get the fullness of what it is you’re going to be demonstrating.
[00:07:47] LaQuisha Hall: So first I just wanna say I decided to use a medium that I often hear as an art teacher and mentor people are afraid of. So I [00:08:00] think when it comes to mixed media, we know that we can throw all the things on the page, and because it’s called mixed media, it will turn out, you know, but when it comes to watercolors, so we have to be a bit more intentional with where we’re trying to go.
And so I’ve decided to use that because I think when you can master being, uh, satisfied with watercolor art, then you’ll gain a level of fearlessness that you may not have had before. And so, because also it is the spring season where I am, I’m located in Maryland and also. As I mentioned earlier, I love nature, I love florals.
I have created a prototype of what we’re gonna do, which involves us watercoloring and doodling florals. And so here’s a sneak peek of what we’re gonna do, and I’m so excited because the supplies [00:09:00] are limited. All you need is watercolor, paper, watercolors. The brush and a black pen and an imagination that allows you to create flowers.
So we’re not going to paint flowers we see, but flowers that we or create shapes and turn them into florals. So I’m really excited to do this, uh, lesson with everyone.
[00:09:28] Stacy Zant: Oh my word. We’re excited that you are bringing these techniques, you’re bringing this, this sort of. Value to those who are wanting to try something new.
Wanting to make sure that they’re able to tap into the beauty of even the simplest things, like shapes, as you mentioned, and allowing that to create and lead to the masterpiece and, oh my word, even. You know, really getting out of our comfort zone and knowing that, hey, you don’t have to have all the things.
You just need [00:10:00] some simple tools to help you to spend quality time in the word of God and really, Create that masterpiece. Thank you, Laquisha. So, you know, Laquisha, I want you to also share, cuz you touched a little bit about this, um, just moments ago about fearlessly doing, doing what it is that you need to do and creating the florals.
So I want you to share what does it mean to you to be a fearless creator?
[00:10:29] LaQuisha Hall: I’m gonna tell you exactly what that means. It means doing whatever I need to do and keep it in the back of my mind that I can turn the page and start again.
Sometimes we approach art with this idea that it has to be right the first time, but we’re working in sketchbooks sometimes, or we’re working on paper pads, or we’re writing in journals, or we’re typing on the computer. If you are a writer [00:11:00] and that’s the type of art that you do, we can start a new document on Microsoft Word.
We can turn the page in our sketchbooks. I am. More able to embrace being fearless and freely creating when I know I can start again. And if you think about it, it’s just like our labs. I might not do everything right the first time, right? I might have a conversation with someone and say something wrong, or I might, you know, do something contrary to what I had planned to do.
But the beauty of life and, and being fearless is knowing that you have the chance to create again, that you have the chance to start again. Without those new starts, we wouldn’t even really be able to enjoy our lives cuz we would always be basking on what went wrong in the past. So I’m grateful for those blank pages that are beyond the ones that I’m creating on.[00:12:00]
So I’m incredibly encouraged by. The fact that whatever I’m creating on or in there is a blank page beyond it. And so if I’m creating in a sketchbook or a paper pad, or even Microsoft Word, if you are a writer, I write often. I just keep in the back of my mind. That if whatever I’m working on does not work out, I can always turn the page or I can always create a new document on Microsoft Word.
I just think it’s important for us to remember that we can start again, that the art that we are creating in the moment does not have to be final, and so, I can mess up just like I do in life. I, you know, you might encounter someone and mess up at what you say or how you treat them, or how you react to something.
And so those new chances in life, those new chances in art are the things that [00:13:00] can fuel us to be fearless because. I’m gonna try again. That’s basically what I’m saying. I’m going to try again on a new page, on a new day, and I might even try a new style, a new medium, or I might try to say things a different way to this person that I care about.
And I’m grateful for those spaces and opportunities because we can see a lot of how we should carry ourselves through life, through art.
[00:13:28] Stacy Zant: That’s so powerful knowing that we can begin again knowing that we don’t have to throw in the towel when things don’t work out or come together the way that we thought it should.
Right? But when we trust in the Lord, we know that. He’s working all the things that’s going on or that we’re creating together for our good. And so, you know, I want you, you’ve been so generous in all that you’ve provided thus far, your expertise, of course, the [00:14:00] session, and just even sharing your gift, who you are, your voice.
And so I want you to share. You know, another gift that you so kindly, um, presented and you’ve brought forth to the fearless creators in attendance today for the summit as well as the spring preview, they can opt in for a freebie that will be available at the bottom of your presentation page. And so speak a little bit about that freebie.
[00:14:30] LaQuisha Hall: Uh, information updates once a month to my subscribers, and if you join me in that space, you’ll be able to download a printable that supports another thing that I do creatively in order to ground myself. So I created something called five point Journaling. And this is a journaling style where we basically write about the positives.
So there are five specific things that I write about every single [00:15:00] day to keep myself focused daily. And so you’ll receive that download along with some illustrations that you can use on sticker paper or whatever you print on and you get, adhere those to your journal and start positively writing about your life experiences as well.
Oh,
[00:15:18] Stacy Zant: beautiful. Beautiful. Thank you so much for generously giving of your resources and your treasures. Leia, it’s been such a delight to have you as our guest here today on the podcast as well as for our summit and the presentation you’ll be giving. So I’d love for you. To share any final words when it comes to just encouraging our attendees to tune into your session and what the greatest takeaway you’re hoping they’ll receive, and then where can they connect with you?
One place they can go to right now and connect with the amazing Naisha.
[00:15:56] LaQuisha Hall: Well, thank you again for this space and opportunity to [00:16:00] share. Um, the one thing I would love for participants to take away. Is that, uh, my brand is called Confident Canvas, but I am not the only confident canvas. We are all canvases that present ourselves to the world daily and it is my hope that everyone walks away feeling confident in some way, shape, or form so that they too can refer to themselves as a confident canvas and they can connect with me on Instagram at Confident Canvas.
Also Facebook.
[00:16:35] Stacy Zant: Oh, fantastic. Thank you so much, Laquisha once again for your time, your talent, your treasures, and all that you’ve invested to help those who will be tuning into your session to fearlessly create florals and so much more. Until next time, we are here to help you to and remind you that you were made to create [00:17:00] fearlessly.
We’re equipping you to use your gifts, be fearless, and of course profitable.
